WordWave wins Singapore Supreme Court contract
The company is currently installing digital audio recording equipment in 25 courtrooms and two chambers at the new building, designed by Sir Norman Foster. When the court opens in July, WWIA will offer a comprehensive, daily transcription service, with reporters using this high-tech equipment to create accurate and timely written records of all proceedings.
It’s the first time Singapore’s Supreme Court, which handles all criminal and civil trials in the state, as well as some disciplinary hearings, has outsourced its transcription service in this way. Previously, it employed its own court reporting team to capture proceedings, working from analogue tapes.
“The move to purpose built new premises has given the Supreme Court the chance to bring its transcription service into the 21st century too,” says Charlotte Pache, WWIA Managing Director. “Our DART service has been tried and tested at courtrooms around the world and will put legal professionals in Singapore at the cutting edge for years to come.”
As well as more modern transcription arrangements, the new Supreme Court will also feature the latest audio/visual equipment to help lawyers present their case more effectively, wireless “hot spots” for easy Internet access, and interactive information kiosks to guide visitors around the building.
Says Mr Toh Han Li, Senior Assistant Registrar of the Supreme Court: “The move towards digital recording will have a major benefit to all stakeholders in the litigation process. Parties no longer have to ‘watch the Judge’s pen’ and consequently proceedings will move at a faster pace, saving time and costs for all concerned. We look forward to working with WordWave, an established name amongst the litigation community, in implementing the Digital Transcription System for our new Supreme Court building.”
WordWave’s contract with the Supreme Court runs until 2008, with an option to renew for a further two years. The win follows a highly successful 12 months for WWIA’s Singapore office, which recently moved to larger premises to meet growing demand for its services.
