Star Wars Surprise for Court Reporters

There was a surprise waiting for our reporters in Court 52 of the High Court recently - two full-sized models of characters from Star Wars greeted them as they entered the courtroom. As well as the six-foot Stormtrooper and Fighter pilot, there were thousands of pounds worth of helmets, breastplates and gauntlets arranged before the judge.

The case concerns a multi-million pound copyright dispute between Lucasfilm and an English prop designer who is accused of making illegal replica Star Wars outfits.

One of Merrill’s court reporters, said: “I got quite a shock when I saw the Star Wars figures, they were extremely lifelike and not what you expect to see in court (or anywhere for that matter). The barristers had a bit of fun when describing the armour and the judge confirmed that he had seen the Star Wars films.”

Merrill Legal Solutions was providing daily court reporting services to Harbottle & Lewis.

Lorraine Medcraft, Merrill Legal Solutions’ European Sales Manager, said: “Our team is used to working on high profile cases and this will be one to remember. Certainly not the usual day in court.”
